PADDINGTON: A NEW APPROACH. Various changes are imminent at Paddington (in 1992) with the introduction of the new class 165 Turbo units. In this feature we take a look at the station as it is today, compared to five years ago.

THE LAST FIVE FIFTIES. Featuring the famous five ‘Sir Edward Elgar’, ‘Thunderer’, ‘Valiant’, ‘Glorious’ and ‘Fearless’ during their last months. Laira’s celebrity quintet are seen on railtours to Littlehampton, South Wales, on The West Coast Main Line and Cornwall. Locations include Milford, Ford, Tondu, Stormy Down, Shap and Moorswater.
PARIS via PENGE (The Channel Tunnel Routes) This section reviews the routes that will be used to connect the Channel Tunnel. The International terminal at Waterloo is seen under constrcution, as is the new North Pole servicing depot. Also featured is the engineering work on the Ashford-Folkestone line. We take a look back at earlier ‘Chunnel’ plans. Motive power includes a Class 86! CT20s, double-headed 33s, 56s & 47s and a triple header.
LONGSIGHT 150. A brief look at open day exhibits is followed by action on the mainline with ‘Pathfinders’ mega tour and the regional railways special service trains. Action includes classes 20, 60 & a very sick pair of 26s moments before failure at Bolton & and Class 60/37 combination departing Preston.
THE SUMMERTIME SUMMER-Y. The new summer timetable began in May. In this section we look at some of the traction changes brought in on 9th May, including class 165 ‘turbos’ replacing the class 47s out of Paddington, the end of Intercity to Shrewsbury, Class 31s finishing on parcel duties, new class 153 routes, plus much more.
