The Preservation Era

The new chapter of the legendary ‘Deltics’ following the 2nd January, 1982 and the end of an era. Eventually, and to the surprise of many, no fewer than six ‘Deltics’ escaped the cutter’s torch. This programme charts the 11-year progress of the groups that helped save them and shows how the ‘Deltic’ legend is kept alive today.

Doncaster, 1982 - the infamous Deltic Open Day; the handing-over ceremony for 55 009 and 55 019 and D9000; the first runs on the North York Moors; 9000 and 55 016 in blue on the Nene Valley; the handing over of Tulyar; the first double-header in preservation - the Silver Jubilee; 55 015 & 55 016 at the Keighley & Worth Valley Gala; 55 019 at Butterley; green repaints for D9000& D9016; the Didcot Gala; 55 002’s only runs since withdrawal; 9019 at Great Central; 55 015 on the NYMR and on fire; D9000/D9016/9019 & 77 015 at the Severn Valley; Tulyar & Alycidon with blue cab repaints; 9019 on the Mid-Hants and returning to the GCR by road; D9000 and D9016 at the Paignton Galas; and ... the return of Crepello, exclusively for our cameras!
