To many the end of steam on the Southern Region in 1967 marked the end of an era. However, alongside a fascinating range of motive power, from the unique Hastings Units to ‘Cromptons’, Class 74s continued to work a wide range of traffic. In this programme we explore this variety and a number of traditionally signalled main and branch lines during the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s.

The ‘Hastings Units’ on the line through Hastings to Ashford in the 1980s. Includes the units hard at work on the line from Hastings to Tonbridge.

The line from Wareham to Weymouth with a Hymek, Class 33s and electrics including a detailed look at Weymouth prior to the modernisation and electrification of the route.
